乱獲や汚染などで失われている海の生態系を守るため、環境省はようやく海洋生物の絶滅危（き）惧（ぐ）種リスト（レッドリスト）づくりに乗り出すことを、２３日、名古屋市で開かれている生物多様性条約第１０回締約国会議（ＣＯＰ１０）のイベントで発表した。

高級食材として売るため密漁者にヒレを切り取られ、フィリピンの海岸に打ち捨てられたジンベエザメの死を嘆く女性。マリン・フォトバンク主催の「2010年海洋保護写真コンテスト（2010 Ocean in Focus Conservation Photo Contest）」で、国連の「国際生物多様性年」を記念して設けられた「最も心に響くフォト（Most compelling image）」賞に選ばれた。 ナショナル ジオグラフィック協会付き探検家のシルビア・アール氏によると、絶滅が危惧されるジンベエザメにとっての脅威は、密漁だけでなくプラスチックも大きいという。体は巨大だが性格はおとなしいジンベエザメは、「大量の海水とともに飲み込んだプランクトンを濾過して食べるのだが、同時に飲み込んだプラスチックで内臓を詰まらせたり、捨てられた漁具や設置された網に絡まったりすることもある」。 20世紀半ばまで海ではほとんど見かけなかったプラスチックが、今では海洋システムを崩壊させつつあるとアール氏は指摘する。実際にプラスチックは、海洋と、プラスチックを飲み込んだ生物との間の化学的関係性を根こそぎ変えようとしているのだ。 Photograph by Peri Paleracio, Marine Photobank下：Projeto Tamar Brazil/Marine Photobank

10/9（土）、私を含め日本人3名、外国人3名の国際色豊かな6名で、かつ大雨の中、ジンベエザメの早期解放を求める署名（日本版250名、海外版2,750名、合計約3,000名)を波左間漁業共同組合様、館山市役所の2箇所へ提出して来ました。
